This page explains what MechanicBrief does with information on your device. It is written in plain language to match how the app works in version 1.

Who we are

MechanicBrief is made by CafeRace, Inc. Contact: ineedit@caferace.com.

What the app does

MechanicBrief is an iOS app (bundle id com.caferace.MechanicBrief) that talks to an ELM327 Bluetooth OBD adapter. It can read diagnostic trouble codes and live vehicle data, show a plain-language brief, and clear codes only after you confirm. It is advice and information only—not a replacement for a qualified technician.

Data we collect (and do not)

No CafeRace account. You do not create a username or password with us for v1.
No ads. No selling of data. We do not sell your personal information.
No third-party analytics in v1. The app does not include third-party analytics SDKs in version 1.
On-device records. Scans and optional photos or files you choose to keep (for example receipts, registration, insurance, or driver’s license images) are stored on your device.
Optional iCloud. If you enable it, those records may sync via your iCloud account. CafeRace does not operate a separate cloud account for your MechanicBrief data.

VIN lookup (NHTSA)

If you use VIN decode, the VIN is sent to the free NHTSA vPIC VIN decoder so the app can show vehicle information. That request goes to NHTSA, not to a CafeRace server. NHTSA’s own practices apply to what they receive.

Purchases

Purchases go through Apple StoreKit / the App Store. Apple processes payment. CafeRace does not receive your full payment card number.

Bluetooth and vehicle data

Communication with the OBD adapter happens over Bluetooth on your device. Live data and trouble codes are processed on the device to build your brief. Clearing codes requires your explicit confirmation in the app.

Children

MechanicBrief is not directed at children.

Changes

If privacy practices change (for example in a later version), we will update this page. Continued use after an update means you are aware of the revised policy.
